A sitcom set in and around the mayor's office in New York City, this hit series was developed for Michael J. Fox by Gary David Goldberg. This 1999-2000 fourth season was the actor's last with the show; diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991, Fox managed to work with the illness for years, but finally went public and bowed out for health reasons. The 26 episodes here open with Deputy Mayor Mike Flaherty (Fox) blowing his romance with co-worker Nikki (Connie Britton) after a drunken (if chaste) sleepover with supermodel Heidi Klum (one of many real-life celebs appearing as themselves), but revving back up when Heather Locklear joins the cast as Caitlin Moore, Mayor Winston's new campaign manager. As Caitlin and Mike spar over control and access to Winston (Barry Bostwick, in prime doofus form), their attraction throws off romantic sparks. Regulars Richard Kind, Michael Boatman, Alan Ruck, Alexander Chaplin, and Victoria Dillard fill out the often dysfunctional municipal staff. The ensemble cast's rapport accounts for much of the series' success, while Fox is perfect as the charming operator running things behind the scenes. The two-part finale, which sets up Fox's departure with a scandal, concludes with a moving curtain call for the actor, saying farewell to the cast and the live audience. Recommended. (S. Axmaker)
