Compiling all 25 episodes of the anime series in a single collection, Spiral presents the complete adventure chronicling teenager Ayumu Narumi's search for his missing older brother Kiyotaka. It doesn't help, of course, that Ayumu himself is a suspect in Kiyotaka's disappearance, which is being viewed as a possible murder, but things really get out of hand when a rash of serial killings ushers in a new reign of terror. Ayumu believes a group called the Blade Children may be responsible for the mayhem, but details concerning their existence are elusive—until the Blade Children require Ayumu's services, and then stop at nothing to gain his attention. Spiral doesn't lack for action—kidnappings, killings, traitors, distressed damsels, and deranged subcultures are all par for the course—and if the animation is somewhat stiff and quotidian (all of the characters appear to be having bad hair days), it's easy to forgive thanks to a vigorous and challenging storyline. Rated TV-PG, and presented in a dual-language six-disc boxed set, DVD extras include character profiles, image galleries, outtakes by the voice performers, and a nifty text “History of Magic Squares,” which takes an in-depth look at a particularly thorny plot twist. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (P. Hall)
