The second and final season of this sitcom from Britain's Sky TV combines a jovial story about an accidental spy with a father-son subplot. Darren Boyd plays Tim Elliott, an ordinary bloke who has joined MI5 by mistake. Much of the humor arises from his blundering efforts to do the job, which exasperate his hardnosed boss, The Examiner (Robert Lindsay), but he finds some compensation in a budding romance with his colleague, Caitlin (Rebekah Staton)—although that is complicated by the return of her old flame. Meanwhile, Tim spars with ex-wife Judith (Dolly Wells) over custody of their precocious 10-year-old son, Marcus (Jude Wright), whose competition at school against a smug rival (and a youthful infatuation with a classmate) makes for some amusing episodes, and the series features the typical array of over-the-top supporting characters. Unfortunately, the writing isn't particularly witty, Tim is a fairly bland hero, and Lindsay wildly overplays his role. But Wright is charming as the straitlaced Marcus, and his adventures—sometimes with Tim, sometimes without—form the most engaging elements of the series. Compiling all 11 episodes of the 2012 season, including a Christmas special, this is an amiable (without being especially memorable) show that could appeal to older children and their parents. A strong optional purchase. (F. Swietek)
