Amy Huberman stars as Tara Rafferty, a young and talented solicitor at a Dublin law firm, who strikes out on her own after discovering that her fiancé Eric (Rory Keenan), who is a junior partner in the firm, cheated on her. Setting up office in the back room of a neighborhood coffee shop, she follows the quirky legal maverick playbook by gathering a motley crew of associates: street-smart-client-turned-secretary and assistant Ray (Emmet Byrne), private detective Meg (Fiona O'Shaughnessy), and friend and mentor Vincent (Neil Morrissey), a senior counsel with marriage problems. Meanwhile, Tara's mother counsels her to forgive Eric and get married, while Eric is pressured by the firm to do whatever it takes get Tara back into the fold. But that is not bloody likely, especially since every new case pits Tara against her former colleagues and she starts uncovering unsavory behavior in the “respectable” old firm. There is nothing particularly new or original about Striking Out, but it boasts a likable cast, an urban Irish setting with an atmosphere and culture diverging from the more familiar legal dramas set in English cities, and—as Tara decides to follow her interest in family law—episodes focused on a different kind of legal case. Presenting all four episodes from the 2017 first season, extras include cast and crew interviews and a photo gallery. Recommended. (S. Axmaker)
