“Vapid,” “imbecilic,” “annoying”—these are the first words to come to mind regarding this so-called reality TV series, which airs on the E! channel. Sunset Tan takes place in and around a trendy West Hollywood tanning salon staffed by the shallowest El-Lay airheads I've ever seen. To the extent that the show revolves around any one person, manager Nick D'Anna receives much of the attention as he deals with empty-headed, backbiting employees, some vying for the managerial position due to open up at the company's new Las Vegas salon. Naturally, this means a lot of sucking up to the owners, who eventually decide to fly the whole group to Vegas to determine which staffer might prove to be the best “fit.” Early entries in the dozen 2007 first season episodes compiled here try to generate sympathy for Erin Tietsort, a naïve Oklahoma girl trying to adjust to life in Los Angeles, but by season's end she turns out to be just as reprehensible as the series' obnoxious “Olly Girls,” Holly Huddleston and Molly Shea, dimwitted bimbos whose voices are set at a fingernails-scraping-on-chalkboard pitch. The ongoing tedium is occasionally relieved by glimpses of the salon's “celebrity” clients, who include such C-listers as Kim Kardashian, SNL's Chris Kattan, and foul-mouthed E! host Chelsea Handler. DVD extras include a featurette with the Olly Girls, deleted scenes, and cast interviews. Not recommended. (E. Hulse)
