Although Ran Kotobuki hails from a family of dedicated law enforcement officials—her father is police chief, her mother and older brother are officers, and her younger sister can't wait to become a detective—Ran just wants to dress cute and hang out with her high school friends in downtown Shibuya, a trendy section of Tokyo. But her deeply instilled sense of personal justice drives Ran to keep her turf free of crime. Frothy, bright, and largely episodic, Super GALS! is based on the popular 1999 manga, produced at a time when “gal culture” was pervasive in the Japanese capital. While centered on Ran and her closest friends—sweet former gang member Miyu and shy bookworm Aya—the introduction of assorted other characters give this light, comedic series variety throughout its 52 episode run, which is largely engaging, despite a few lulls. Predictably featuring fashion, friendship, and silly fun, Super GALS! also somehow manages to serve up abundant life lessons about both personal growth and developing healthy relationships. Compiling the first and second seasons (aired in 2001–02) in a 10-disc set, suitable for 13-up, the initial 26 episodes here offer an alternate English dub, while the rest are presented in Japanese with English subtitles only. DVD extras include liner notes. Recommended. (L. Martincik)
