Full disclosure: I confess that I never actually had the teensiest desire to watch a single minute of Survivor during its TV run, so my expectations weren't exactly Olympian when I cued up this "highlights" disc. For those of you who were stranded in Bora Bora for the past year, Survivor's premise is relatively simple: plop 16 photogenic, and--if recent news stories are any indication--possibly morally deficient people on a deserted island, where the soup du jour is generally rat-based, and let them play an adult version of playground politics (i.e., make weekly decisions to boot one individual off the beach with the last person standing after 39 days pocketing a million bucks). No matter how utterly insipid the series happened to be in actual fact, I'm assuming there must have been some drama and suspense in each show--attributes that are, unfortunately, absent on this disc. In fact, each chapter begins by naming the person who will be given the pariah vote at the end of the episode. Extras include an insipid "making of," episode summaries, maps, and Richard Hatch's bare ass. Purchase according to demand. (R. Pitman)
