This MTV supernatural series—a mix of dark fantasy, teen melodrama, and young adult empowerment—continues to be one of the youth-skewing channel's most popular scripted shows. Scott McCall (Tyler Posey) is the teen wolf of the title, a good-hearted high school kid who uses his shape-shifting powers to protect his town—human and supernatural citizens alike—from predators. In the fourth season, those threats include mercenary killers targeting the supernatural population for a bounty, and the return of a cruel and overzealous werewolf hunter who has apparently risen from the dead. Alpha wolf Scott's unconventional pack of werewolves and humans add a new member to the group—Malia (Shelley Hennig), who is still learning to control her shape-shifting—while Lydia (Holland Roden) explores her banshee powers. In this world, the kids lead the way and the adults join the fight under their leadership, which becomes its own kind of bonding experience between the generations. Teen Wolf is a fun show, one that is also smart and full of likable and interesting teenage characters whose anxieties play out in mythic metaphor. Compiling all 12 episodes from 2014, extras include behind-the-scenes featurettes and a gag reel. Recommended. (S. Axmaker)
