The original Terminator concept has been revamped for this TV series, which—for all its half-baked logic—delivers action by the truckloads and production values befitting big-budget feature films. Executive producer Josh Friedman has retooled the old franchise by shifting emphasis from the time-traveling cyborg played by Arnold Schwarzenegger on the silver screen to single mom Sarah Connor (Lena Headey), who was chosen by fate to bear the child destined to rule mankind during a war against a massive computer system programmed to enslave humanity. Warned that her messiah-like son John (Thomas Dekker) has been targeted for death by assassins from the future, Sarah, John, and their protector Cameron (Summer Glau)—a Terminator masquerading as a high-school student—struggle through the nine episodes of the 2007 first season, trying to stay one jump ahead of their murderous pursuers, while also attempting to locate and destroy the computer software that will become the sinister Skynet system. Headey looks, dresses, and acts too young to be the mom of a 15-year-old boy, but she and Grau provide ample eye candy—especially in the Blu-ray version—for the adolescent male target audience. DVD extras include three episode commentaries, behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, cast auditions, and a gag reel. Recommended. (E. Hulse)
