One of the best TV shows currently airing, this FX original series stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, deep-cover Soviet agents circa the 1980s who are living as suburban American parents in Washington D.C.—next door to an FBI agent. Their mission grows more complicated when their teenage daughter Paige (Holly Taylor), who struggles with the knowledge of her parents' double life, confesses the truth to her church pastor. Meanwhile, a plan to secure a deadly experimental virus puts the family at risk of exposure, and FBI secretary Martha (Alison Wright)—who Philip has married in a fake ceremony under a false name—is exposed, after which Philip must arrange passage for her to Russia. Frank Langella is superb as the Jennings' KGB handler, a veteran whose paternal affection for the couple makes him protective when they are assigned dangerous missions. This season also follows a character back to Russia, where the reality of life behind the Iron Curtain contrasts with the ideals held by Elizabeth and Philip, who are devoted to the socialist cause and believe in their native country's propaganda without question. But Philip's faith is beginning to be chipped away as his conscience begins to weigh heavily, even as FBI Agent Stan (Noah Emmerich) regains his own confidence and commitment. The Americans remains a powerful drama about parenthood and personal responsibility, with the spy elements simply making the stakes all the higher. Compiling all 13 episodes from the 2016 fourth season, extras include a deleted and extended scenes. Highly recommended. (S. Axmaker)
