This three-disc set offers a sampler of what TV Guide called “one of the greatest television shows of all-time”—17 fan-favorite episodes from the first five seasons (1960–65) of The Andy Griffith Show, plus the moment that launched the series: the 1960 Make Room for Daddy episode “Danny Meets Andy Griffith,” in which Griffith's homespun humor catches smart-talking city slicker Danny Thomas off guard. Griffith stars as widowed Sheriff Andy Taylor, raising young son Opie (Ron Howard) and keeping the peace in the generally quiet burg of Mayberry. Most of the trouble, in fact, stems from misunderstandings (which Andy solves with simple life lessons)—minor problems blown out of proportion, coupled with the overzealous efforts of Deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts), a lovable, well-meaning incompetent so jittery he appears to have OD'ed on espresso. The gentle comedy, anchored in Griffith's laconic charm and laidback authority, along with the lazy portrait of rural life, are so dated they're endearing. Frances Bavier is doting Aunt Bee, Howard McNear is Floyd the barber, Hal Smith is town drunk Otis, and Jim Nabors is dimwitted gas station attendant Gomer—just a few of the characters at the center of the warm community for this beloved series that lasted eight seasons. The collection also features the 1986 TV-movie reunion Return to Mayberry, as well as original broadcast versions of main titles and end credits with sponsor spots. An excellent way to experience the best of the series without investing in the entire run, this is recommended. (S. Axmaker)
