The Aquabats! Super Show! Season One!

In terms of a family-friendly vehicle for a colorful and comical music combo, The Aquabats! Super Show! hits dizzying high notes, worthy of comparison to The Monkees (although worlds away in style). A surf-punk-ska quintet who portray themselves as campy superheroes, the Aquabats engage in nutzoid antics (punctuated by fake commercials) as band members—all with different powers—confront goofy creatures and villains, including a mad scientist who recycles junk into monsters, a lovestruck walking cactus-thing, and a malevolent leprechaun who haunts a golf course. Sporadically, the narrative splits off into a parallel timeline that follows the Aquabats in cartoon incarnations as they voyage through space. The demented humor has cross-generation appeal, with celebrity guest stars including “Weird Al” Yankovic, Jon Heder, Rip Taylor, and Lou Diamond Phillips. Compiling all 13 episodes from the 2012 first season, extras include audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes skits, and a blooper reel. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (C. Cassady)
