Comprised of four 50-minute programs from the History Channel, the thousand-year-spanning The Barbarians explores the historical impact of four groups of marauders--the Vikings, the Goths, the Mongols, and the Huns--through interviews with notable historians and terrific dramatic recreations. The first program, The Vikings, opens in 700 A.D., delving into the social, economic, and political factors (lacking a central government, the Vikings were made up of individual tribes or communities that relied on terrorism and intimidation rather than rule of law) that led this notorious people to begin plundering first each other and then neighboring countries. After nearly 400 years of conquest, the Vikings left a powerful legacy of social and political change, colonizing the countries they conquered, promoting the concept of nationalism, spurring economic growth through the establishment of trade centers in the major port cities of Europe, and ushering in technological advances in shipbuilding and navigation. Also including the episodes The Goths, The Mongols, and The Huns, the DVD version adds the Biography episode Genghis Khan: Terror and Conquest, and a behind-the-scenes featurette. Sure to appeal to armchair historians, this is highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (L. Stevens)
