The first season of this FX original series—a remake of a Danish mystery show, relocated to the border crossing between El Paso and Juárez—followed the partnership between obsessive, brilliant, by-the-book American cop Sonya (Diane Kruger) and frustrated but dedicated Chihuahua State Police detective Marco (Demian Bichir), working together to find a serial killer with roots on both sides of the border. The second (and final) season expands the web of stories and cast of players as Marco goes after brutal Juarez drug lord Fausto (Ramón Franco) and Sonya investigates a murder that leads back to an assassin (Franka Potente) in Fausto's operation who is guarding Fausto's financial ties in the U.S. Also returning from the first season are two El Paso reporters (Emily Rios and Matthew Lillard)—now on the trail of Fausto's drug smuggling operation—and an American woman (Annabeth Gish) with a secret tunnel under the border that serves as a drug pipeline. Built on the political and cultural tensions between the U.S. and Mexico—as well as the gray areas between law and justice in a corrupt system—The Bridge is an ambitious and serious show, but lacking the critical raves or popular following of other cable crime dramas, it was cancelled after this second season. Compiling all 13 episodes from 2013-14, extras include behind-the-scenes featurettes, and deleted scenes. A strong optional purchase. (S. Axmaker)
