Think of this TV series as a sequel to the 1993 same-titled film (which was based on the bestselling John Grisham novel), with Josh Lucas in the role created by Tom Cruise—attorney and family man Mitch McDeere. Ten years after the events portrayed in the big-screen production, Mitch takes himself and his loved ones out of witness protection, but immediately gets tangled up with another shady firm and the vengeful son of the now-deceased mob boss he helped put behind bars. While a thread of conspiracy runs throughout the episodes—with flashbacks to the years spent undercover and flash-forwards to dangers to come—the rest of The Firm consists of the usual underdog courtroom drama. Lucas's Mitch is one of the most insufferably condescending and smug attorneys on TV, a holier-than-thou litigator who wins every case he takes—a little too contrived, even for a high-concept legal show filled with corrupt lawyers and corporate high-rollers. More fun is Callum Keith Rennie as his brother, Ray, a streetwise investigator; and Juliette Lewis as Tammy, his chain-smoking receptionist. Molly Parker is also on hand as Mitch's wife and bookkeeper, Abby, and Natasha Calis is daughter Claire. For all the complications and dramatic turns, The Firm failed to deliver interesting characters and relationships during its single season run. Compiling all 22 episodes from 2012, extras include behind-the-scenes featurettes and interviews. An optional purchase. (S. Axmaker)
