Like the first, the second season of this A&E-aired police drama serves up an agreeable if lightweight procedural leavened with domestic sidebars. Star Matt Passmore brings a roguish charm to the role of Jim Longworth, a predictably unconventional Chicago cop who relocates to South Florida and joins a state investigative unit. Although the character's smugness can be off-putting, Passmore generally keeps him from becoming insufferable. The cases Longworth takes on—mostly murder investigations—won't win any prizes for cleverness, but are interesting enough by basic cable standards, especially since Longworth is nicely paired with Carlos Gómez as medical examiner Carlos Sanchez. Longworth also continues his romance with nurse Callie Cargill (Kiele Sanchez), although the situation is complicated by several new developments, including the return of Callie's ex-con husband, the arrival of a Chicago policewoman who was once Longworth's lover, and Callie's decision to join Longworth at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement as a forensics expert. Apart from the locale, not much distinguishes The Glades from other genre offerings, but it remains amiable, undemanding fare. Compiling all 13 episodes from 2011's second season, DVD extras include an extended episode, audio commentary, behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, and a gag reel. A strong optional purchase. (F. Swietek)
