When Michael Jackson's brothers were planning this 2009 A&E series, they obviously couldn't have foreseen the tragedy that would transpire during the production; consequently, the two-episode The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty opens with a message from Marlon, Jackie, and Tito about the death of their younger sibling. The show then flashes back, via photos and vintage video, to their days in the Jackson 5, at which point Jermaine enters the picture (Randy chose not to participate). The rest of the series looks at their reaction to the news of Michael's death, dealings with the media, and recording of their 40th anniversary album. States Jackie, “I just want people around the world to see the truth about us. We're a family like everybody else.” Parents, spouses, and children also participate, including matriarch Katherine Jackson; Jermaine's glamorous wife, Halima; and Jackie's charismatic son, Siggy (Janet is heard via speakerphone). Gladys Knight (who performs with Tito in London) and producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis also put in appearances as the Jacksons travel to Los Angeles, New York, Lagos, and Mumbai, where they rehearse and work on choreography (watching the brothers dance to Michael's “Shake Your Body Down to the Ground” is a poignant moment). Like many celebrity reality series, The Jacksons can feel scripted and/or “directed,” but it nevertheless offers insights into the dynamics of a fascinating clan. When Jermaine talks about the band's dissolution in the 1970s or Jackie discusses Michael's passing, there's no mistaking the genuine tears. Recommended. (K. Fennessy)
