Mary Richards (Mary Tyler Moore) throws down the gauntlet in “The Good-Time News”—the third season (1972-73) opener of this 24-episode compilation—asking for equal pay to her predecessor's at Minneapolis TV station WJM-TV. Other standout episodes here include “The Georgette Story” (featuring series newcomer Georgia Engel), which finds Mary butting up against both her boss Lou Grant (Ed Asner) and Mr. Conceited anchorperson Ted Baxter (Ted Knight) when she offers advice to Ted's new girlfriend, and “Romeo and Mary,” in which Mary puts her foot down over an eager suitor (guest star Stuart Margolin), with unexpected results. Mary's best friend, Rhoda (Valerie Harper) also shines in “Rhoda the Beautiful,” when she enters a beauty contest. Meanwhile, Murray (Gavin MacLeod) goes into a blue funk in “Murray Faces Life,” after he learns that a former college classmate has snagged a Pulitzer Prize. Moore, Harper, and Knight each won Emmys this season. Unfortunately, this three-disc boxed set features no extras, but fans will still enjoy this romp down memory lane with one of TV's most cherished heroines. Recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
