Eric Idle wrote, directed, and stars in this sequel to his 1979 hit mockumentary, The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash. Reprising his role as intrepid and unsmiling television journalist S.J. Krammerhead, Idle reintroduces us to Liverpool's most famous export, the Pre-Fab Four, a.k.a. the Rutles. Combining original footage and outtakes from the first film, as well as fresh interviews with the likes of Tom Hanks, Bonnie Raitt, and Garry Shandling, Krammerhead reviews the Rutles' mythical impact on the world in the 1960s and updates us on the fates of the band's caustic leader Ron Nasty (Neil Innes), handsome bassist Dirk McQuickly (Idle), quiet spiritualist Stig O'Hara (Rikki Fataar), and jolly drummer Barry Womble (John Halsey). The result isn't as sharp or inspired as the original, but it's a fine parody all the same and rich in Beatles references for the faithful. DVD extras include an alternate ending and additional interviews. Recommended. (T. Keogh)
