Set in an imaginary city-state during an unspecified distant era, this anime series features young, busty, red-haired, and perpetually bumbling Cecily, who tries to follow her family's noble lineage as a knight. While Cecily's ineptitude in battle suggests she'd be better off pursuing another vocation, the mysterious one-eyed blacksmith Luke has inexplicable faith in Cecily, and uses his magic to provide her with weaponry that turns her into a serious warrior—which turns out to be timely, since a nefarious cloaked villain with his own brand of sorcery has threatened the land. To its credit, The Sacred Blacksmith sports fine characters, both in Cecily as a reluctant hero, and in her evolving relationship with Luke, an enigmatic young man who slowly reveals a complex personality. But as an action-adventure piece, the series is highly predictable and somewhat dull—particularly when one of Cecily's swords takes on human form and follows its own agenda—and the animation is merely adequate. Compiling all 12 episodes originally aired in 2009 in a two-disc boxed set, rated TV-MA, DVD extras include a booklet. Optional. (P. Hall)
