The 1998-99 season of this wildly popular animated series reflects a minor but perceptible decline in quality, but as The Simpsons was (and still is) a ratings powerhouse, there's no sense in quibbling. Besides, even relatively weak episodes here are far better than what's found on most live-action sitcoms. And scattered throughout the 23 entries from the 10th season are a few real gems, chief among them: “Lisa Gets an ‘A',” in which Lisa becomes addicted to video games and resorts to cheating in order to pass an important test, while Homer attempts to give his pet lobster a “nice hot bath” with predictable results. Nearly as good is the perennial Halloween episode, “The Treehouse of Horror,” a three-part horror mini-anthology, with the most hysterical segment being “Hell Toupee,” in which Homer is possessed by the evil hairpiece of an executed criminal. Also on hand are the usual array of fabulous guest stars, including Elton John, Alec Baldwin, Kim Basinger, Dolly Parton, Mark Hamill, and Robert Englund (playing his signature character, Freddy Krueger). DVD extras include an intro by creator Matt Groening, audio commentaries on all episodes, deleted scenes, a selection of Bart's crank calls, a stills gallery, and more. Highly recommended. (E. Hulse)
