The Super Milk Chan Show, like South Park or Ren and Stimpy, is crammed full of media references, cute characters spewing expletives, and a unique visual flair. Super Milk Chan is a five-year-old, drooling superhero, full of snark, prone to impatient outbursts, who works under the command of the easily distracted President. Milk Chan zooms through adventures, stopping counterfeiters, slashers, and drunken sea creatures, accompanied by her exasperated robot Tetsuko, her melancholy slug Hanage, and a robotic dog with bladder issues. More often than not she gets distracted, shirks her duties, and goes out for sushi. The visuals are unique, with character and landscape designs echoing The Jetsons' simplicity of lines and curves, while the repetitive swearing and off-color jokes make the 17-up rating appropriate (though the teens who chortle over South Park will not be fazed). Acknowledging that The Super Milk Chan Show's humor and appeal lies in its culturally specific humor, ADV Films has made this a double-disc set, with one disc featuring the original Japanese episodes translated faithfully, and the second adjusting for American audiences. Intercut with the animated sequences are moments of live action (although the U.S. sequences, following the lives of the voice actors, try too hard and go on too long). The dual-language discs also feature character Q&As, behind-the-scenes footage, and meandering cast commentaries. Although one bizarre ride, this is still oddball fun for older teens and adults. Optional. [Note: The Super Milk Chan Show, Vol. 2 is also available.] Aud: P. (R. Brenner)
