This anime series takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a bad-attitude teenager carries the only hope of saving the devastated human population from a gruesome race of mutants. The strange title describes the warring parties: The Third are three-eyed aliens, while the kick-butt teen is Honoka—who, despite being human, also boasts a third eye, albeit a blue-hued peeper instead of the red ones favored by The Third. Honoka is joined in her adventures by a ragtag band that includes her artificial-intelligence sidekick Bogie; the unsettling nurse Paife (who appears to have a Sapphic interest in Honoka), and the gentle mechanic Zankan and his daughter Millie. Despite its strong central female character, The Third unfortunately falls into predictable story traps, including Honoka's gradual discovery of hitherto unknown powers, coupled with the usual chases, kidnappings, and overblown battles. While the mix of CGI and traditional animation is innovative, the narrative has a too-familiar feel. Compiling all 24 episodes from 2006 in a dual-language, six-disc set, rated 15-up, DVD extras include interviews with the Japanese voice actors, character bios, and music videos. A strong optional purchase. (P. Hall)
