A deadpan spoof of boys' adventure novels and 1960s cartoon favorites such as Jonny Quest, this occasionally hilarious animated series is a treasure-trove of pop-culture references. Once-renowned scientist Doctor Venture travels around the world with his dimwitted sons Hank and Dean, who see mystery and adventure in the most mundane situations while simultaneously failing to recognize the real thing when it bites them in the butt. Former secret agent and Venture family bodyguard Brock Samson—who has the macho-man qualities Doc Venture always wanted—keeps himself busy rescuing the brothers from a variety of supervillains, and hooking up with a bevy of damsels. A mainstay of the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block (of edgy animated fare), The Venture Bros. boasts clever writing and delightfully tongue-in-cheek vocal performances—especially from Patrick Warburton, formerly of The Tick, who plays Brock with perfect, self-aware snarkiness. This two-disc set includes all 13 episodes from the 2004 first season as well as the series pilot, a bonus episode, audio commentaries, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and deleted scenes. Recommended. (E. Hulse)
