More of an acquired taste than Monty Python's Flying Circus, Fawlty Towers, or Absolutely Fabulous, this 1982-1984 British series enjoys a fervent cult following. Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Nigel Planer and Christopher Ryan star as four roommates who live in various stages of squalor and slackdom. One's a metal-studded punk, one's an Eeyore-like hippy, one's a more conventional hustler, and the last is a sloganeering leftist. From talking rats to nuclear bombs in the kitchen, each surreal episode unfolds in subversively unpredictable ways. Adding to the fun are early screen appearances by the likes of Absolutely Fabulous co-creator Jennifer Saunders, Emma Thompson, and Robbie Coltrane, as well as bands such as Dexy's Midnight Runners, Madness, and Motorhead. The Young Ones: Every Stoopid Episode is, with apologies to the Pythons, something completely different. Recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
