In the languages of Africa, there is no word for religion (because God is everywhere) we are told in This Far By Faith, a PBS-aired six-hour exploration of the history, evolution, and role of religion and faith-based traditions among African Americans. Beginning with the first slaves who came to America with African beliefs that were later melded with Christianity to form a composite faith, the series looks at how the first African Americans were drawn to those elements of Christian theology that promoted freedom and human dignity--finding strong parallels in the story of the children of Israel who labored in bondage to Egypt--and later embraced the Evangelical church's messages of brotherhood, equality, and self-expression (not only was the church a place of worship and comfort, but slaves also met there to plot their freedom). In addition, the series addresses the impact of education, the resurgence of Islam (it is estimated that 10% of the slaves were Muslim), the role of religious leaders in the quest for civil rights, and religion's place in the lives of contemporary African Americans. Combining interviews with religious scholars, historians, and practicing clergy, together with vignettes and archival footage/photos, This Far By Faith is an excellent recounting of the fascinating story of how deep abiding faith and trust in God helped African Americans to triumph over hardship and adversity. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: H, C, P. (L. Stevens)
