Thundercats! Are! Go! No, wait: that was Thunderbirds. Still, Thundercats are go, in their first DVD collection, which is sure to draw as much cash from the pockets of retro-hungry Generation Xers as the 1985-87 animated series originally drew from parents to buy all those damn tie-in toys. Thundercats: Volume One, compiling the first 33 episodes, features animation that is downright cheesy (this is long before anyone ever heard of CGI) and stories that are absolutely goofy, as what look like refugees from an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical—with names like Lion-O, Cheetara, and WilyKat and WilyKit—battle Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living with the mystic Sword of Omens, and encounter creatures such as the Ro-Bear-Berbils (robot bears). DVD extras are limited to a featurette on fans (including Star Trek: The Next Generation's Wil Wheaton). As nutritionally empty as a bowl of sugary breakfast cereal, this is nevertheless recommended for larger collections. (M. Johanson)
