TV viewers who first encountered standup comic Tim Allen as the star of Home Improvement will be drawn to this double bill featuring the 1990 and 1991 Showtime comedy specials Tim Allen: Men Are Pigs and Tim Allen Rewires America, which inspired the popular sitcom. Although Allen had a loyal but small fan base, these showcase solo efforts reached a larger audience and made several Hollywood executives sit up and take notice—including, legend has it, the then-head of Walt Disney Pictures. Allen's set celebrates the essential qualities of contemporary “masculinity,” including the American man's fascination with car engines and power tools (as evidenced in the soon-to-be-Toolman's constant cry for “more power”). His observations here served as the blueprint from which his sitcom character was ultimately fashioned, one endearingly annoying trait at a time. DVD extras include a recently shot interview with Allen, who reflects on his career, and the never-before-released five-minute short film “Docu-Comic,” featuring Allen. Recommended. Aud: P. (E.
