Not to be confused with the 1980s Transformers television series, Transformers Animated reintroduces the giant robot characters, who here seek to protect their adopted Earth home as well as eight-year-old human friend Sari. While Optimus Prime and his team of Autobots busily fight crime and save lives, their attempts at assimilating within the world of humans are often graceless, leaving behind a trail of unintended destruction. Sari possesses a key that will give the Autobots an energy boost or heal them when they're broken, but neither she nor her Transformer friends realize that her inventor father is being unwittingly duped by an impaired Megatron to create a new generation of the Autobots' perennial enemy, the Decepticons. While Megatron slowly gathers his resources, the Autobots take on turbo-powered thieves, robotic dinosaurs gone wild, biotech-enhanced human fighters, and strange new Decepticons disguised as innocuous machines. Not as fun as the classic Transformers series from over two decades ago, these 13 episodes from the 2008 first season will still appeal to younger viewers. DVD extras include a photo gallery sneak peek at season two. Optional. [Note: Transformers—Animated: Season Two will be released on Jan. 6.] (T. Keogh)
