Diehard fans of the cheesy Ultraman might get a kick from this 13-episode collection from the Tiga narrative arc of the too-long-running Japanese television series, but for the rest of us, it's quite a slog. "Guts" is one of those typical intergalactic peace-saving organizations, populated almost entirely by plastic pretty Japanese youth in funky futuristic uniforms, whose headquarters is attacked repeatedly. Press materials for this DVD ask us to “experience all the excitement as powerful new monsters threaten mankind," but only the chronically naïve would be surprised by the arrival of super-powered Ultraman in the proverbial nick of time to save the day and universe (in that order). Not rated (but suitable for 7-up), the one saving grace here is that these 1996 episodes are presented in their original Japanese versions with English subtitles. DVD extras include fighter vehicle and monster galleries. Not a necessary purchase. [Note: Ultraman Tiga, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 are also available.] Aud: P. (P. Hall)
