Created by John Mortimer, this sophisticated ITV mystery series is set in Klinsky's, a high-end London auction house. Because primary appraisers Ben Glazier (Richard Wilson) and Maggie Perowne (Jan Francis) often debate the value of works of art, the show offers some of the same appeal as Antiques Roadshow (albeit with considerably more character development). The pair's associates include chairman Lord Holloway (Robert Lang); his lover, department head Camilla (Marsha Fitzalan); and wine expert Nick (Michael Siberry), Maggie's boyfriend, who believes that Ben carries a torch for Maggie. Ben and Maggie do, in fact, enjoy an Avengers-like chemistry as he's several years older (although he does zip around town on a motorcycle). Over the course of the series' seven episodes from 1994, the duo travel to New York and Moscow, attempt to distinguish originals from forgeries, fend off accusations of theft, and battle with a trio of scheming colleagues. Under the Hammer tucks a history lesson or two into each segment, as well as a fair amount of humor. Guest stars include Phyllida Law, Martin Clunes, and Sir John Gielgud. DVD extras include a text bio of Mortimer (whose daughter Emily appears in the episode “The Virgin of Vitebsk”). Recommended. (K. Fennessy)
