In 2097, Neo Hong Kong is under threat from the Virus, a computer bug that can infect humans through the implants in their brains, turning them into monsters. The elite armored suit-equipped response team S.T.A.N.D. is tasked with defeating the Virus wherever it manifests itself. The latest member of the team, Serge, a man with a mysterious past who sees visions of a beautiful winged woman in his dreams, was brought on board by the enigmatic team leader Raven for reasons as yet undisclosed in this second volume of a three-disc series (featuring episodes 5-8). Viewers will learn a bit about the pasts of a few S.T.A.N.D. members, including gutsy (not to mention busty) fighter Erika, computer specialist Mirei (a cute 15-year-old girl), and, to a limited extent, Serge himself, as well as meet a rather ludicrous villain called the Brain Lizard, who may or may not be controlling the Virus, and seems to know something about Serge's past. While the animation is generally good, and there are a few interesting ideas (including a sleep program run by brain implants--say goodbye to insomnia!), Virus largely feels like a combination of elements from other, more popular shows--including the mecha suits of Bubblegum Crisis, the computer world of Serial Experiments: Lain, and the atmosphere and visual elements of Neon Genesis Evangelion. With minor nudity and animated violence, this is appropriate for ages 13 and up. Optional. Aud: P. (S. Raiteri)
