Another bargain purchase for library wildlife collections, this two-episode offering from the PBS-aired Nature series looks at penguins and otters. In “The World of Penguins,” the (often) tuxedoed-looking birds (who have wings but can't fly) appear awkward and funny on land, but are absolutely graceful underwater where their wings stretch to swiftly propel them. On their preferred turf (which is actually surf--where penguins spend most of their lives) they are fast and powerful predators, and they're also just plain fun to watch, with some spectacular exits from ice holes (I give ‘em a 9.2 in style and execution for the reverse dive onto land). Although many think penguins only live in Antarctica, they actually hail from New Zealand, and are spread throughout much of the southernmost (and coldest areas) of the Southern hemisphere. In “A Sea Otter Story: Warm Hearts and Cold Water,” viewers follow a young otter who lost her mother and receives her first lessons in life from humans who act as surrogates. Along the way, various interesting facts about these playful, affectionate animals are shared, including the observation that the sea otters' incessant grooming is not for vanity's sake, but is rather an essential part of keeping their ultra-hairy selves (otters have more hair in a few square inches than most dogs have on their entire bodies) in peak condition to maintain warmth in frigid waters. Boasting gorgeous cinematography, this wonderful look at two fascinating creatures is highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (C. Block)
