This series is unlike any series other in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It blends classic television sitcoms with the MCU; what a treat it was to see what era of television the series would pay homage to! Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) live in a reality that takes them through different decades of television tropes. Wanda and Vision live the almost perfect suburban life—but nothing is as normal as it seems.
Directed by Matt Shakman and head writer Jac Schaeffer, they were able to bring all the action, drama, science fiction, and romance audiences love about the MCU to a new format. Most audiences had no idea what to expect. Now, the idea of bringing more TV series to the MCU seems very promising.
What must be acknowledged are the two outstanding performances from Olsen and Bettany. Olsen's acting strengths particularly shine in this series and her character was more fully developed and grew to become a new beloved hero. Vision is known for being serious, but in this role, Bettany got to have more fun and show off his comedic side. We also get a deeper look at Wanda and Vision’s connection and the love they have for one another. Some familiar faces returned in the supporting cast (I won’t say who). As for Kathryn Hahn, her character explored different levels and served as the series villain, a twist that I was never expecting.
Everything in the series is absolutely unique from its storytelling and the emotional themes it explores, such as grief and saying goodbye. WandaVision is magnificently crafted, from the production design and cinematography to the visual effects. Costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo deserves serious acknowledgment for her excellent job combining the sitcom and superhero styles. Audiences get to see Wanda’s original costume being brought to life, and it looked amazing on Olsen.
Then there are the catchy opening title songs that can be heard throughout the series. Songwriting duo Robert and Kristen Anderson Lopez helped write jingles for the episodes that helped capture each style of the nostalgic decade the series explored. Just about every single jingle is impossible to get out of your head.
Other than the great tone and pacing, WandaVision felt like a treasure returning each week and it is unfortunate the series is over. The future does look bright as more MCU is headed for Disney+ and fans will be excited to see what is in store next. Up next is The Winter Soldier and Falcon set to be released this Friday, March 19! Recommend.
