Here's a major discovery: the restored version of the long-lost complete 1959 made-for-television adaptation of Budd Schulberg's controversial titular novel. While severely bowdlerizing the original text—the extremely touchy subjects of the central character's Jewish faith and the permeation of Communist sympathizers in Hollywood were completely removed—this filmed adaptation of What Makes Sammy Run? nonetheless presents an astonishing portrait of a scheming heel's rapid ascension to the upper echelons of the Hollywood power elite. Larry Blyden, usually a light comic actor, is brilliant as the despicable yet fascinating Sammy Glick, who casually lies as he navigates through a maze of boardrooms and nightclubs to achieve the power he craves. Whether stealing ideas from timid writers or bullying weaker Hollywood players into following his lead, Glick is the ultimate nightmare of raw, spiteful energy. John Forsythe and Barbara Rush provide intelligent support as the writers who inadvertently fuel Sammy's run, while Dina Merrill shines as the heiress who provides an unexpected comeuppance to Glick. Delbert Mann's direction favors tight shots, creating a claustrophobic environment that mirrors the emotionally harrowing maelstrom at the center of the story. DVD extras include audio commentary by Rush and Merrill, an interview with Schulberg, and an accompanying booklet. A powerful production that offers a sterling reminder of the glory days of 1950s television, this is highly recommended. Editor's Choice. (P. Hall)
