Christopher Walken and Susan Sarandon are excellent in this outstanding adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's wry short story. Walken is Harry Nash, a shy, bumbling hardware store clerk, who comes alive on stage in local productions of serious dramatic works, such as Cyrano de Bergerac. When Helene Shaw (Susan Sarandon), a phone company worker who travels from town to town on business, is asked to try out for A Streetcar Named Desire, she meets and falls in love with Nash's fiery portrayal of Stanley Kowalski. Even though she is warned, Helene cannot believe that Harry is a virtual cipher offstage. His smoldering Stanley is too real to be just acting. But, as Helene finds out, Harry would no more take a woman in his arms than start a conversation. Helene, however, is determined, and she hits upon a surefire way to get Harry's attention. An excellent film. Highly recommended for larger public and junior and senior high school libraries. (See ANY FRIEND OF NICHOLAS NICKLEBY'S IS A FRIEND OF MINE for availability.)
