The 2001-02 season not only features some of Will & Grace's best episodes, but also climaxes with a stunning surprise that fundamentally alters the show. Season four opens with gay lawyer Will (Eric McCormack) returning from vacation and falling right back into his familiar routine with straight interior decorator roommate Grace (Debra Messing), whose new beau Nathan (Woody Harrelson) feels threatened by their chumminess. Ultimately, in “Rules of Engagement,” Nathan proposes to Grace but is rebuffed; she's later inconsolable once she realizes that she's messed up a good thing, and in the hilarious “Bed, Bath and Beyond,” Will, Karen (Megan Mullally), and Jack (Sean Hayes) try to cheer her up but only make things worse. One of the highlights here is the Thanksgiving show, “Moveable Feast,” in which the four friends depart on a holiday motor tour that includes visits to their respective dysfunctional families (Debbie Reynolds guest stars as Grace's domineering mother and Blythe Danner appears as Will's mom). As the year draws to a close, Will senses that his “biological clock” is running out and asks Grace to be the mother of his child, an emotional episode leads into the sidesplitting comedy of errors season finale, “A.I.—Artificial Insemination.” Four years into the show, the cast, writers, and directors are working together in perfect harmony, the one-liners are as tart as ever, and double entendres abound. This 25-episode season's overall excellence demonstrates yet again why Will & Grace continues to be a ratings champ. DVD extras include featurettes and a blooper reel. Highly recommended. (E. Hulse)
