Rebecca Gibney is Sydney-based Detective Sergeant Eve Winter in this Australian crime drama about a veteran homicide investigator who is lured back into the field (Winter took a desk job to escape the emotional toll of murder cases) after multiple victims of a serial killer are found in shallow graves in a country town. Prefaced here with the 2014 feature-length pilot TV movie The Killing Field, which introduced Winter and her former boss (and one-time lover) Detective Inspector Lachlan McKenzie (Peter O'Brien), the limited 2015 series Winter is a self-contained mystery in which Winter heads up her own team, which includes former boss McKenzie, who requested the assignment. The death of a wife and mother in a seaside fishing town outside of Sydney is connected to a young woman who survives a hit and run in the city. The survivor was once a foster child raised by the murdered woman's parents and is now a witness in a case against a major drug ring. Winter enters into a shaky partnership with a federal agent (Matt Nable) who is determined to take down the ringleader. This well-written show, which is stronger on character and suspense than police procedure, joins series like Jack Irish and Janet King as high-quality Australian crime dramas that are similar to British mysteries but with a distinctive sensibility and landscape. Compiling both the pilot movie and all six episodes, this is recommended. (S. Axmaker)
