In the second season of this British series about female agents in occupied France during World War II, Julian Glover and Jane Asher return as Col. James Cadogan and Faith Ashley, who run the special operations unit overseeing the women's missions. Also returning is Kate Buffery as Liz Grainger, the chief operative in the first run, who has now been transferred home. Liz has a hand in recruiting two new agents, mousy radio operator Emily (Jane Snowden) and determined widow Vivien (Lynn Farleigh), who are parachuted behind enemy lines along with Colin (returnee Jeremy Northam) as their squad leader. But before long Liz herself also returns to France, as does Resistance leader Kit (Michael J. Jackson). This second set serves up plenty of action and suspense, including an attempt to shut down a radio transmitter, a raid on a weapons factory, and repeated hair's-breadth escapes from Nazi troops. But there's also a good deal of personal drama—romance and a woman's search for her lost daughter—and the two elements come together nicely in a surprisingly harrowing finale. Technically, the shot-on-video series is no great shakes, but those who enjoyed the exciting first season will find this compilation equally engaging. Presenting all seven episodes from 1989, this is recommended. (F. Swietek)
