Adapted from the critically acclaimed play and first shown on HBO, Wit may just be the "feel bad" movie of the year. And that's a good thing! Emma Thompson stars as Vivian Bearing, an English professor whose life has been devoted to the study and teaching of poet John Donne. Diagnosed with ovarian cancer, Bearing ironically serves as a "student" to a former pupil of hers--a doctor now charged with administering an experimental regimen of chemotherapy. The treatment probably won't cure her; but, if she can endure it, future patients may be helped. Director Mike Nichols properly respects the theatrical origin of his forceful material by allowing Thompson to affectingly address the camera directly. A harrowing look at the meaning of life--and death--this is highly recommended. (T. Rich)
