Bristling from a worldwide accord prohibiting android development, Japan withdraws from the U.N. in 2067, setting up a huge electromagnetic barrier to create a cloak of total high-tech isolationism, while continuing outlawed research in advanced robotics. Flash forward a decade: following a number of bizarre events, an elite American commando team—including Lt. Cdr. Vexille Serra and her lover Cdr. Leon Fayden—is sent to infiltrate the Japanese border on an undercover information-gathering mission. Unfortunately, the group is detected, and all are killed during the ensuing mecha firefight, except for Leon (who is captured) and Vexille (who escapes). Shortly thereafter, Vexille discovers the truth about what is happening in Japan and joins a resistance movement planning an assault on Daiwa—an evil monolithic corporation responsible for creating a cybervirus that literally turns humans into robots. From the creative team behind 2004's groundbreaking Appleseed, writer-director Sori's Vexille is a beautiful, CGI-animated, sci-fi-action anime (backed by a pulsing techno soundtrack) that manages to be both thought-provoking and visually impressive (wait till you see the Tokyo metal-seeking giant Dune-like sandworms!). Recommended. [Note: Vexille will also be re-released on November 4 as a two-disc special edition with over two hours of bonus features on DVD for $29.98 and on Blu-ray for $34.98.] Aud: P. (R.
