Woody Allen's latest, a dramedy set in Spain, is considerably more erotic than most of his films—no doubt due to the presence of three sexy women in the key female roles: Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, and Rebecca Hall. The latter pair play young American tourists staying in Barcelona with friends: levelheaded Vicky (Hall) studies Catalan art and culture while her flighty pal Cristina (Johansson) studies the local men. Cristina is particularly attracted to charming painter Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem), whose troubled past includes having been stabbed by his tempestuous ex-wife, Maria Elena (Cruz), whom he takes in after she attempts suicide. It's hard to keep track of all the sexual shenanigans—eventually all three women sleep with Antonio, and just to add a little spice, the Woodman throws in a same-sex kiss between Cruz and Johansson, who according to the unnamed narrator have a little thing going on themselves. The luscious Spanish locations and catchy guitar tunes create a dreamy atmosphere, but the narrative lacks a compelling arc. Optional. (E. Hulse)
