Co-produced by the National Clearinghouse for Abuse in Later Life, A Mother Never Gives Up Hope features four elderly women talking candidly about a lower-profile type of domestic abuse: mothers abused by their adult sons. Discussing how they are handling their conflicting emotions, the subjects—seen interacting with one another and with social workers—are articulate but not self-pitying, and they don't demonize their offspring as they struggle to come to terms with damaged relationships. The documentary also checks in after a two-year period to see how the victims have adapted or changed. One mother can't abide the idea of her son living on the street, although when he returns after a lengthy absence he still has anger issues (in the end, she kicks him out). A disturbing look at a sad situation, this documentary featuring insightful firsthand accounts is recommended. Aud: C, P. (F. Gardner)
