Classic Film

Video Librarian defines classic film as cinema produced from the dawn of filmmaking through the 1990s. This section invites librarians and educators to explore the evolution of film history, from early silent cinema and Classic Hollywood through the radical, independent filmmaking movements of the 1960s and 1970s, and into the rise of the blockbuster and “megapicture” mentality that shaped the decades that followed.

All classic film reviews are organized by decade, making it easy to locate titles within specific historical periods or cinematic movements. In addition to reviews, Video Librarian offers articles focused on building and maintaining a comprehensive film history collection, helping libraries represent key eras, styles, and voices while supporting film studies curricula, cultural programming, and lifelong learning.
