A collaboration between author Philip C. Stead and his wife, illustrator Erin E. Stead, this animated adaptation of the 2010 Caldecott Medal-winning and ALA Notable book features narration by David de Vries and music by Ernest Troost. Friendly and somewhat frail-looking senior citizen Amos McGee rises early and barely deviates from his morning routine of changing from striped PJs to his zookeeper uniform, having tea and oatmeal for breakfast, and making good time on the number five bus to head to work. On the job, Amos also adheres to a schedule, visiting special animal pals for activities that include playing chess with an elephant, engaging in a quaint race with a tortoise (who always wins), having a quiet sit-down with a shy penguin, lending a hankie to an allergy-stricken rhino, and telling a story to an owl who is scared of the dark. But one day Amos wakes up with sniffles and chills and must stay in bed. Fortunately, his creature buddies make a considerate visit to ensure their giving friend receives the type of care that he deserves. Featuring a read-along option, DVD extras include interviews with the Steads. A wonderful, kindhearted tale, this is highly recommended. Aud: K, P. (J. Williams-Wood)
