Powerful, uplifting, and timely, All Because You Matter is an anthem of a children’s book. The lyrical prose of author Tami Charles sings the message “you matter” to young black and brown children with a strong and caring tone. Combined with the superb narration, gorgeous illustrations, and gently inspiring music, All Because You Matter is one that will be beloved by young viewers and educators alike.
The message of “you matter” is given throughout the entire duration of the work when talking about the youth as an individual, to their connection with their family, community, ancestors, and out to the foundations of existence. It masterfully keeps the importance on the individual mattering because they exist and not because of their connections to others, which is an important distinction to make. There is no question on how one matters through contributions or other people’s judgment either, as it emphasizes that even if others find you different or you fail at something, you still matter.
Where the work truly shines is broaching broader and more difficult subjects without toning it down or talking down to the child. It doesn’t shy away from topics such as systemic racism and police brutality against children of color. All Because You Matter balances broader strokes with finer details so children who are old enough to know about these topics will understand them while giving adults larger concepts to discuss at their discretion for those children who do not know. These topics might be a bit heavy in discussion, however, the overall tone of the work is uplifting and a call to find importance in oneself.
The message is beautifully relayed through minimal editing on watercolor collage illustrations depicting black and brown children in a world rich in colors and textures. The music effortlessly flows between the shifting illustrations and tones of the work to heighten the impact of the voice-over. Aud: E, I, P. Highly recommended.
