Hey Bear! Disney Channel staple Bear in the Big Blue House, produced by the late Jim Henson's company, gets the Broadway-style treatment in this live stage show that brings all the series' popular characters together with huge, grizzly-looking, sweet-acting host Bear. Accompanied by a foursome of energetic twentysomethings, the traveling live performance is built around the interactive premise of young audience members helping the Blue House gang keep a surprise birthday party secret from guest of honor Tutter the mouse. Familiar muppet faces like lemur Treelo, Ojo the bear, and otter twins Pip and Pop cooperate on decorations, presents, and refreshments, periodically asking questions of the audience before finally enjoying a successful celebration (best line: “I'm shakin' my otter booty!”). The somewhat thin story includes various song-inducing lessons on topics ranging from cooking to cooperation, featuring tunes such as “That's My Name,” “Bear Cha Cha Cha,” “Bear's Birthday Song,” “What's Mine is Yours,” and “What's in the Mail Today?” Although the young audience seemed a little subdued at times, this well-intentioned program--with five bonus sing-along songs on the DVD version--starring a lovable children's TV fixture is recommended. DVD extras include and trailers. Aud: K, P. (J. Williams)
