Mickey, Donald, and Goofy topped Disney's A-list of cartoon stars, but Chip 'n' Dale were the studio's great comedy team. This generous cache of vintage 1940s and '50s cartoons will delight fans who may only be familiar with the mischievous rodent duo in their Rescue Rangers incarnation. Two career milestones on this volume are "Chicken in the Rough," the first cartoon in which they received top billing, and the Oscar-nominated "Chip 'n' Dale," their first go-round with tantrum-prone Donald Duck, whose feathers they delighted in ruffling. Like Bugs Bunny over at Warner Bros., Chip 'n' Dale only took to the offensive when their home or food supply was threatened, as in "Out of Scale," "Working for Peanuts," "Out on a Limb," "Three for Breakfast," and "Dragon Around." "Two Chips and a Miss" is a fun change of pace in which the duo vie for the heart of lounge singer Clarice, while "Food for Feudin'" pairs the scamps with Pluto, who makes the mistake of hiding his bones in the same tree where the chipmunks store their acorns. Loaded with personality and bounding with fun, these cartoons are among the most playful and nutty in the Disney catalog. Recommended.
