We must welcome the DVD release of Fraggle Rock's second season with loud huzzahs as we further explore Jim Henson's subterranean world, accessed through a hole in the workshop wall of the unwitting human, Doc. Here, fun-loving Fraggles, hard-working Doozers, and the behemoth, Fraggle-chasing Gorgs all live, if not in harmony, then at least in a "delicate balance" (to quote Henson's original series pitch book, which is included with this five-disc set). Life lessons and "top quality shenanigans" are engagingly interwoven throughout these 24 episodes. In "Wembley's Egg," Wembley must decide whether to keep or free a tree creature whose egg has fallen into Fraggle Rock. In "Boober's Dream," the industrious and ever-careful Doozer learns to get in touch with his playful side, which he meets in his dreams. "The Trash Heap Doesn't Live Here Anymore" thoughtfully illustrates the concept of change. Meanwhile, Gobo's uncle, Traveling Matt, continues to send his postcards from "Outer Space" (the real world) to note the strange things he observes among us silly creatures. Fraggle Rock's gallery of colorful characters are instantly relatable personalities: aspiring explorer Gobo is a leader, Red craves attention, and Wembley is even more insecure. The clever original songs really make Fraggle rock, and the captivating character-driven stories are refreshingly literate, with delightful wordplay that invites repeat viewings. Because of its fantasy-flavored setting and decidedly non-topical humor, not to mention the timeless artistry of the puppetry (the all-knowing Trash Heap is a real marvel), Fraggle Rock holds up exceedingly well decades after its creation. DVD extras include a special half-hour-plus tribute to show creator Jerry Juhl and over an hour's worth of interviews with those connected with the show, as well as behind-the-scenes home movie footage and a music video. Recommended. (D. Liebenson)
