Recently, I overheard several mothers of male toddlers and preschoolers discussing their children's interests: "He likes dirt and trucks a lot," one said. "Oh, mine too!" said another, "it's all about dirt, trucks, and noise." Boy, could I have pitched them on this video: See huge noisy machines with cool names like "excavator" and "backhoe" push giant mounds of dirt around! Gasp as massive metal chunks get tossed around like paper! Hear fun original songs like "Can You Dig It?" while these machines do their thing! A young narrator somewhat woodenly introduces each machine by name, explains its function, and shows how and where it works, appealing to kids' love of categorization (ask any kid about dinosaur names and you'll see what I mean). Hard to miss with this loud, machine-filled, inexpensive program. Recommended. Aud: P. (E. Gieschen)
